Created by the Finnish Ice Hockey Union, the first Karjala Cup tournament was held in December of 1995. Since 1996, the event has been held in November. The Karjala Cup pits Europe's top four national teams in a round-robin tournament. Finland's archrival, Sweden, captured the inaugural tournament in 1996. The Finns avenged this defeat the following year led by goaltender Jani Hurme. However, Sweden was back on top in 1998 as Mikael Nylander scored six points to lead the way.
