The gold medal winning Soviets posted a record of 8-1-1, although they failed to defeat rivals Czechoslovakia. For the fourth time, Anatoly Firsov led the competition in scoring, this time with 11 goals and eight assists in 10 games, an average of almost two points per game. Alexander Maltsev also shone for the champions, scoring 10 goals to give him a total of 25 in 10 games over the last two tournaments. In his final World Championship appearance, goalie Viktor Konovalenko was not up to par, allowing 18 goals in 7 games. Fortunately 18-year-old sophomore Vladislav Tretiak provided superb backup netminding, giving up only 6 goals in 5 appearances.
