Most of the hockey experts who watched Viktor Tikhonov coach the Soviet Union to eight World Championships say he never iced a stronger squad than the one that won gold in 1983. Six Soviet players - goalie Vladislav Tretiak, defencemen Vyacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov, centre Igor Larionov and wingers Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov - formed the tournament all-star team. The only point the Soviets lost was in a 1-1 tie with Czechoslovakia, a game which some say produced the highest tempo of any hockey game in history. The Krutov-Larionov-Makarov line accounted for 22 of the 54 Soviet goals, but it was ably backed up by another Red Army unit with towering Viktor Zhluktov centering Helmut Balderis and Sergei Kapustin. Kasatonov and Fetisov were oustanding on defence, collecting 11 and 10 points, respectively.
