World Championships Poster
The 2000 World Junior Hockey Championships in Skelleftea, Sweden was the beginning of a dominant year for the Czech Republic in International hockey.

Not only did the Czechs take gold at the World Juniors, (their first ever World Junior triumph) but their men's Senior team would also win the World Championships a few months later in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Czech Republic faced off against the defending champions from Russia in the gold medal game. After regulation, there was no score, so the teams headed into overtime, where, again, neither team could light the lamp. After four periods of scoreless hockey, the teams engaged in a shootout to try and determine a winner. In the shootout, the Czech Republic got off to a great start scoring twice on their first three attempts. This prompted Russian coach Petr Vorobiev to replace goaltender Ilia Bryzgalov, (despite the fact he had stopped 46 shots in regulation and overtime) with Alexei Volkov. It didn't matter as the Russians couldn't score on their next attempt, and the Czech Republic won the shootout and the game, with captain Milan Kraft's shoot goal standing up at the game winner. The bronze medal game was also decided in a shootout as the Canadians and Americans couldn't settle anything in overtime with the game knotted at 3-3. Canada's Brandon Reid shot a puck through the legs of the American goaltender Phillipe Sauve for the winner. The United States other netminder, Rick DiPietro was named the tournament's best, while Milan Kraft got the nod as the top forward and Russian Alexander Rjazantsev the beset defenseman. Swedish centre Henrik Sedin led the tournament in scoring with 13 points while his twin brother, winger Daniel led the tournament with six goals, and placed third in scoring with ten points.
