The 1986 World Junior Championships, held in many cities across Southern Ontario, came to its dramatic peak in the final game. The Soviet Union beat Canada 4-1 to finish the tournament with a perfect record of 7-0 and reclaim global junior superiority. The game attracted a lot of interest in Europe and was televised to the Soviet Union. Canada settled for a silver medal despite establishing a new scoring record with 54 goals. Two Canadians topped the tournament scoring parade as Shayne Corson (seven goals, seven assists) and Joe Murphy (four goals, 10 assists) each had 14 points. The Best Forward at the tournament was another Canadian, Jim Sandlak, who had five goals and seven assists, the same totals as fellow Canadian Joe Nieuwendyk. The Soviets had the best defensive record, allowing just 14 goals in seven games. Yevgeny Belosheikin was named the Best Goalie, while Mikhail Tatarinov was chosen as the Best Defenseman.
