The first unofficial World Junior Championship was held in Leningrad, USSR in 1974 and it marked the first contact for European teams with Canadian amateur hockey since 1969 when Canada severed its relationship with the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League represented Canada at the tournament, where the hosts were unstoppable. Seven future World and Olympic champions played for the Soviets, as they cruised to the gold medal. Finland took silver, while Canada claimed the bronze. Viktor Khatulev of the USSR was the tournament's top scorer with three goals and six assists, though it was Sweden's Mats Ulander (seven goals, one assists) who was named the Best Forward. Best Defenseman was the Soviets' Vladimir Kucherenko, while Canada's Frank Salive was named the Best Goalie.
