Once again, the Soviet Union and Canada collided for the title, which was not decided until the final game of the 1990 World Junior Championships in Helsinki. Canada had rallied to beat the Soviets 6-4 in their game, but the USSR could still win the gold medal with a win over Sweden on the last day of the tournament. However, a Soviet lineup packed with future NHL stars could manage only a 3-3 tie. Both Canada and the Soviets finished the tournament with records of 5-1-1, but the gold went to the Canadians because of their head-to-head victory. Czechoslovakia finished third. The Czech team dominated the tournament awards with Robert Reichel winning the scoring title with 11 goals and 10 assists and earning a selection to the All-Star Team as well as being tabbed the Best Forward. Jaromir Jagr was second in scoring with 18 points and joined Reichel on the All-Star Team. Canadian Dave Chyzowski (who was third in scoring with 13 points) rounded out the All-Star forward line. Czechoslovakia's Jiri Slegr and the USSR's Alexander Godynyuk were the All-Star defenseman, with Godynyuk tabbed as the tournament's Best Defenseman. Canada's Stephane Fiset was chosen as both the All-Star and Best Goalie.
