Canada rebounded from a disappointing finish in 1987, when a brawl with the Soviet Union cost them a chance at a gold medal, to win the 1988 World Junior Championship on Soviet ice in Moscow. In a dramatic game versus the host nation on January 1, 1988, the Canadians were outshot 40-16, but the brilliant goaltending of Jimmy Waite saved the day. Team Canada won the game 3-2 and later claimed the world title with a record of 6-0-1. The Soviets lost only to Canada and settled for a silver medal after posting a 6-1-0 record. The bronze medal went to Finland. Jimmy Waite was tabbed as the tournament's Best Goalie. Teppo Numminen of Finland was the Best Defenseman. Alexander Mogilny of the Soviet Union was named the Best Forward after topping the scoring list with 18 points (eight goals and 10 assists). Canada's top scorer was Greg Hawgood, who just cracked the top-10 with a goal and eight assists.
