Though it was not the final game, the main attraction at the 1978 World Junior Championships in Montreal was the game between Canada and the Soviet Union. Soviet defenceman Viacheslav Fetisov was matched against 16-year-old phenomenon Wayne Gretzky. The two would be named the Best Defenseman and Best Forward of the tournament, and Gretzky would top the scoring parade with 17 points (eight goals and nine assists), but it was Fetisov and the Soviets who emerged as 3-2 winners. The Soviets later beat Sweden in the gold medal game, while Canada had to settle for a bronze medal on home ice.
