World Championships Photo Sweden went undefeated and outscored its seven opponents by a total of 67-10 on the way to a gold medal at the 1962 World Championship in Colorado Springs. The Swedish victory was tainted, since neither the Soviet Union nor Czechoslovakia participated. The two countries were protesting discrimination of the East German team, which was not granted entry visas to the United States. Canada, represented by the Galt Terriers senior club, had to settle for a silver medal after losing to the Swedes 5-3 and the United States claimed the bronze. Among the best players in the tournament were forward Sven 'Tumba' Johansson and goalie Lennart Haggroth of Sweden, along with U.S. defenceman John Mayasich. Former Toronto Maple Leafs star Todd Sloan played for Canada, picking up 16 points in seven matches. Nils Nilsson of Sweden was the tournament scoring champion with 18 points in seven games. It was during this championship that Father David Bauer conceived the idea of establishing a permanent amateur Canadian National Team to compete in the Olympics and World Championship.
