The 2000 Women's World Hockey Championship in Mississuaga, Canada followed a similar script to the ones that preceded it, and ended in a familiar way. Like all previous tournaments, Canada clashed with the United States of America in the gold medal game and in the end emerged as champions. Though things unfolded in a similar fashion to earlier tournaments, the outcome did appear to be in doubt for much of the final game. The Americans jumped to a 2-0 lead and appeared to be cruising toward their first ever World Championship. Canada's Jayna Hefford got Canada back in the game with a pair of third period goals which left the teams tied at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, veteran Canadian forward Nancy Drolet, who had scored in overtime versus the Americans in the 1997 final; repeated her heroics. Drolet teed up a blast that USA goalie Sara Da Costa got a piece of, but not enough. For centre France St. Louis, the win was bitter-sweet. The 40-year old veteran of five World Championships retired at tournaments end; ending an outstanding career. Canadian Sami Jo Small won the top goalkeeper honour for the second year in a row, while USA defender Krissy Wendell ended with a tournament high thirteen points. Wendell's teammate Angela Ruggiero, earned the top defender award.
