World Championships Photo Beginning this year, points were counted separately for the World and European Championships. The results of games between European and North American teams at the World Championship would no longer count towards the European title. After playing in "B" Pool in 1970, the United States was back in the top flight at this tournament. The Soviet Union won its ninth straight World title but failed to beat the silver medalists from Czechoslovakia. The Czechoslovaks tied the Soviets 3-3 in the first round and beat them 5-2 in the second, but lost a key match to Sweden 6-5. The Swedes took home the bronze medal, despite being upset 2-1 by West Germany. Anatoly Firsov enjoyed another great tournament for the World Champions, producing 19 points. Jiri Holecek was outstanding in goal for Czechoslovakia. By scoring just one goal in a 5-1 loss to West Germany in their final game, the Americans were relegated to Pool B again for the 1972 World Championship.
