The 2000 World Championships hosted in St. Petersburg, Russia saw an historic gold medal game as the countries that formerly made up Czechoslovakia battled for hockey's supremacy. The Slovakians heavily outshot the defending champions from the Czech Republic throughout the game, ending up with a 33-17 edge by the games close. However, the Czech Republic made the most of their opportunities and found the mark with five of their shots defeating their rivals 5-3. The Czechs managed to jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first thirteen minutes of the game. It seemed to be a one-sided affair when Jan Tomajko scored for the Czech Republic early in the third to make it 4-1, but the Slovakians made it interesting closing the gap to 4-3 with two quick, late goals. Czech Republic captain Robert Reichel ended any chances of a dramatic comeback with an insurance marker heading into the games final minute.

The battle for bronze pitted Canada versus Finland in a tight, low scoring affair. Canada's goaltender, Jose Theodore; a former gold medal winner at the World Juniors, continued his excellent play on the global stage. However, Theodore's hot hand wasn't enough as Marko Tuomainen's third period goal led Finland to a 2-1 victory. For Tuomainen it was his second clutch goal in as many years. Tuomainen scored the overtime winner that knocked off Sweden and advanced Finland to the gold medal game in 1999.

Slovakia's Miroslav Satan narrowly edged out the Czech Republic's Jiri Dopita and David Vyborny for the scoring lead, as they finished with tweleve, eleven, and ten points respectively. However, Satan managed to score ten goals along the way and was named the tournament's top forward. The champion Czech Republic's Roman Cechmanek was named the top goalkeeper and his teammate Martin Prochazka received the Most Valuable Player.
