World Championships Photo In an attempt to increase audiences, tournament organizers decided to hold separate tournaments for each of Pool A, Pool B and Pool C in the three Yugoslavian towns where hockey was most popular. Mild weather made hockey feel like a year-round sport with only the snow-capped peaks of the Alps in the distance serving as a reminder of winter. Surviving a 3-3 tie with Sweden, the Soviet Union struck gold again with an excellent record of 6-0-1 at Ljubjlana. The USSR trounced Czechoslovakia 7-1, forcing them to accept the silver medal. Canada, by virtue of its 4-2 victory over Sweden, claimed the bronze. It was an outstanding tournament for Soviet centre Veniamin Alexandrov, who led all scorers with 17 points. Konstantin Loktev of the Soviet Union won the award for the best forward, while defenceman Alexander Ragulin of the Soviets was tops at that position. Canada's Seth Martin was named best goalie after giving up just 10 goals in seven games.
