The 1951 World Championship was split into two separate pools for the first time, with the weaker countries separated from the traditional powers. Czechoslovakia was again absent and the American team sent to Paris wasn't first-rate.
As Canada's representatives, the Lethbridge Maple Leafs encountered little difficulty in winning the tournament. They outscored their opposition 62-6 in winning all six of their games. Sweden finished second to claim the silver medal, after edging out Switzerland on goals for and against differential. Norway, Great Britain, the United States and Finland rounded out the top seven and Italy came out on top of the six-team B Pool with five straight wins.
During a Congress held at the same time as the World Championship, the IIHF decided to withdraw from participation in the Winter Olympics as a result of the ongoing feud that had started in 1948. This decision did not last long however, and in August of the same year the IIHF made peace with the IOC at its Congress in Romania.
