|John Mayasich was considered one of the best amateur hockey players in the United States when he was added to a lineup of mostly college kids on the American Olympic hockey team in 1960. His added muscle and hustle on the U.S. defense, plus his booming slapshot, helped the team pull off a stunning gold medal victory.
Mayasich began his international career with the United States Olympic hockey team in 1956 and earned a silver medal that year. His three goals in a 4-1 win over Canada all but ensured the American's second-place finish In addition to his Olympic experience, Mayasich also represented America at the World Championships in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1966, and 1969, earning a bronze medal in 1962 as well as a selection to the tournament All-Star Team. He had many offers to turn professional during his career, but instead played with the amateur Green Bay Bobcats after his starring days in high school and university in Minnesota.
