Ulf Nilsson was one of the first Swedish players to become a superstar in North America after joining the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association with countryman Anders Hedberg in 1974-75. Both Hedberg and Nilsson ranked among the top scorers during each of their four seasons in the WHA and helped the Jets win the Avco Cup in 1976 and 1978. Nilsson was never able to duplicate his scoring feats during four NHL seasons with the New York Rangers.
Nilsson had played with AIK Solna in Sweden before joining the Jets and had represented his country at the World Championships in 1973 and 1974, winning a silver and a bronze medal. He later played for the Swedish team at the Canada Cup tournament in 1976 and 1981 and was a member of the NHL All-Star Team that took on the Soviet Union in the 1979 Challenge Cup. |
