A Boston University player who had represented the United States at the World Championships in 1975 and 1976, Mike Eruzione gained everlasting fame when he scored the winning goal against the Soviet Union for the United States team at Lake Placid in 1980. Eruzione's goal midway through the third period gave the U.S. a 4-3 win over the Soviets. Two days later, the Americans completed the "Miracle on Ice" with a win over Finland to clinch the Olympic title.
As captain of the team, Eruzione accepted the gold medal on behalf of his teammates and then called them all up to the podium to join him as the American National Anthem was played. He Retired after winning the gold, believing nothing could equal the Olympic triumph. Eruzione later served as a consultant for the television movie "Miracle on Ice" and is now a member of the Boston University hockey coaching staff and director of development for B.U. Athletics. He has also been a longtime television hockey analyst in the United States. |
