Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Lou Nanne played minor league hockey there with Phil Esposito, Nanne later a naturalized U.S. citizen, and starred at the University of Minnesota where he became the first defenseman to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association scoring title in 1962-63. In 1967-68, Nanne joined the United States National Team and captained the squad at the 1968 Olympic Games at Grenoble.
Nanne began his NHL career with the North Stars after the Olympics and remained with Minnesota as a player through the 1977-78 season, representing the United States again at the World Championships in 1976 and 1977 and at the inaugural Canada Cup tournament in 1976. After his playing days, Nanne served as coach, and later general manager and president of the North Stars. In 1981 and 1984, he was general manager of the American team at the Canada Cup. |
