Though his NHL single-season records for goals and points by an American-born player had already been surpassed, Joe Mullen was still the highest-scoring U.S. player in NHL history (with 502 goals and 1,063 points) when he retired after the 1996-97 season. He was the first American to reach 1,000 career points (February 7, 1995) and the first to score 500 goals (March 14, 1997), retiring with 1,063 points on 502 goals and 561 assists. During his career, Mullen played for the United States team at Canada Cup tournaments in 1984, 1987 and 1991. The 1991 American team reached the finals before being defeated for the title by the Canadians. |
