Mike Gartner's first international appearance for Canada came at the World Junior Championships in 1978 where Team Canada finished in third place behind the Soviets and Sweden. After entering the NHL in 1979-80, Gartner went on to appear at the World Championships for Canada three years in a row (1981 to 1983) as his NHL team (the Washington Capitals) struggled to qualify for the playoffs. His speed was an asset on the larger international ice surfaces and Gartner helped Canada win a bronze medal in 1982 and 1983. He was also a member of championship Canadian teams at the Canada Cup in 1984 and 1987. |
