Hayley Wickenheiser

A physically dominant player who is also an excellent passer, 19-year-old Hayley Wickenheiser's six assists led the women's Olympic tournament in Nagano in 1998. Her eight points ranked her second on her team, one point behind Danielle Goyette, and tied her for third at the Olympics, though Canada had to settle for a silver medal behind the United States. The Philadelphia Flyers offered her an invitation to training camp with the team in 1998. She also became internationally known when she spent half a season with Kirkkonummi Salamat, a second division men's league club in Finland. Wickenheiser first joined the Canadian Women's National Team as a 15-year-old in 1994 and helped the team win the Women's World Championship in both 1994 and 1997. Her four goals and five assists at the 1997 tournament ranked second in scoring and earned her a spot on the All-Star Team. She has also represented Canada at the Pacific Rim Championship in 1995 and 1996. Wickenheiser also won gold at the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004 World Championships and was a gold medal winner with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics being named to the All-Star team as a centre and Best Forward of the tournament.Growing up in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Wickenheiser consistently rated as the best player on boys teams in older age groups. As a 12-year-old in 1991, she scored the winning goal in the gold medal game in the 17-and-under girls division at the Canada Summer Games. Four years later she was a pitcher and shortstop with Canada's team at the 1995 World Junior Softball Championship. Star Player Photo
