Harry Smith

Harry Smith represented Canada at the World Championships three times, playing with the Trail Smoke Eaters in 1961 and 1963, and being added to the roster of the Galt Terriers in 1962. A defenseman, Smith was named to the World Championship All-Star Team at each of the three tournaments in which he played.

A native of Trail, as was virtually the entire Smoke Eaters roster, Smith helped solidify a Canadian defense that allowed only 11 goals in seven games at the 1961 World Championships and saw Seth Martin selected as the Best Goalie at the tournament. Smith also added two goals to the cause, including one in the 5-1 win over the Soviet Union in the final game, as Trail earned the last world title ever to be won by a Canadian amateur team. In 1962, Smith had five goals and seven assists at the World Championships, but Canada had to settle for a silver medal behind Sweden in a tournament boycotted by the Soviet Union after the United States refused to grant entry visas for East Germany to compete at Colorado Springs.

Trail became the last Canadian club team to represent Canada at the World Championships in 1963. Though Smith was still an All-Star and Seth Martin was once again named the Best Goalie, loses to Sweden and the Soviets to conclude the tournament saw the Smoke Eaters slide to fourth place. Canada would begin sending a National Team to international events in 1964.
