A longtime executive with the Boston Bruins, Harry Sinden never played in the NHL, but was an amateur star who helped the Whitby Dunlops win the Allan Cup as Canada's senior amateur champions in 1957 and 1959. In between, he led the Dunlops to the World Championship in 1958.
The Whitby team was bolstered by former NHL player Sid Smith and future NHL netminder Roy Edwards, among others, in order to represent Canada in 1958, but as captain, Sinden was the team's emotional leader. A defenseman, he collected four goals and three assists at the world tournament and stood on the podium as the Canadian national anthem was played after the event. The Dunlops were a perfect 7-0 on route to the world title, defeating the Soviet Union 4-2 to clinch the championship in their final game.
In 1960, Sinden and Whitby teammates Bob Attersley, Fred Etcher and George Samolenko were added to the roster of the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchman when they represented Canada at the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California. Etcher, Attersley, and Samolenko ranked as the team's top three scorers, and Sinden added five goals and four assists while bolstering the defense as Canada earned a silver medal behind the surprising United States team that captured the country's first gold medal in Olympic hockey. |
