George Mara

George Mara and Wally Halder were late additions to the Royal Canadian Air Force Flyers roster when the team represented Canada at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The two members of the Barker's Hockey Club in Toronto would become the RCAF Flyers' main offensive contributors, as Halder had 21 goals and eight assists and Mara collected 17 goals and set up nine others as Canada won the gold medal. The RCAF Flyers claimed the Olympic gold because of a better goal average than Czechoslovakia after both nations finished the tournament 7-0-1 including a scoreless tie against each other.

Mara scored Canada's first goal at the Olympic tournament in a 3-1 win over Sweden in the opening game and went on to enjoy four-goal games in wins over the United States (12-1) and Austria (12-0). He had five goals in a 21-1 win over Italy and picked up an assist in the 3-0 win over Switzerland that clinched the gold medal in the final game.
