The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association had difficulty finding a team to represent Canada at the 1954 World Championships before finally selecting Toronto's East York Lyndhursts. The team was not of as high a caliber as the clubs usually sent to represent Canada, but had little trouble outscoring its opponents 57-5 in running up a perfect record through its first six games at the world tournament.
The netminder who had recorded a 0.83 goals-against average to that point for Canada was Don Lockhart. Lockhart would be named to the tournament All-Star Team and was also honored as the Best Goalie at the event despite allowing seven goals in a surprising 7-2 victory by the USSR in the final game. The loss dropped Canada into second place and gave the Soviets the World Championship the first time that they had entered the tournament. |
