Murray Dowey

Murray Dowey was the last member of the team added to the roster of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flyers. The goaltender was recommended as a replacement by Dick Ball after doctors discovered a lung condition that would prevent Ball from traveling to Europe for the 1948 Winter Olympics. Dowey was added to the Flyers from the roster of the Barker's Hockey Club in Toronto, which also provided Wally Halder and George Mara to the Canadian Olympic Team.

Dowey recorded five shutouts in eight games for Canada at the 1948 St. Moritz games and allowed only five goals in total. His excellent record was key to Canada claiming the gold medal, as the Flyers won the Olympic tournament because of a better goals average (69 for and five against) than Czechoslovakia (80 and 18) after the two teams finished with identical 7-0-1 records, including a scoreless tie against one another.

Dowey also became a part of Canadian Olympic trivia when he was penalized for throwing the puck forward (in violation of international rules) late in a 3-1 win over Sweden in the opening game of the 1948 tournament. Dowey was forced to spend the last eight seconds of the game in the penalty box -- the only Canadian goaltender ever so punished -- while defenseman Andre Laperriere used his stick and gloves to guard the net.
