Hooley Smith

Hooley Smith joined the Toronto Granites of the Ontario Hockey Association in 1921-22 and promptly helped the team win back-to-back Allan Cup championships in 1922 and 1923. As the top senior amateur club in Canada, the Granites were invited to represent Canada in hockey at the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924.

Smith, Bert McCaffery and Harry Watson were the Granites' top forwards and scored 18, 20 and 36 goals respectively in the 1924 Olympic tournament. In the preliminary round, Smith scored four goals in a 30-0 win over Czechoslovakia, four more in a 22-0 win over Sweden and five in a 33-0 win over Switzerland. In the semifinals, he scored four goals in a 19-2 win over Great Britain, then added a single goal in a 6-1 win over the United States in the gold medal game. Smith went on to enjoy a Hall of Fame career in the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup with the Ottawa Senators in 1927 and with the Montreal Maroons in 1935.
