Gilbert Perreault was a member of Team Canada in the historic 1972 Summit Series, but was one of four players (along with Vic Hadfield, Rick Martin and Jocelyn Guevremont) who earned the scorn of Canadian fans by leaving the team in Moscow to return to training camp with their NHL teams. On January 4, 1976, Perreault led his NHL team -- the Buffalo Sabres -- to a 12-6 win over the Soviet Wings for the first of only two victories by NHL clubs in the eight-game "Super Series" involving the Wings and the Central Red Army.
In September of 1976, Perreault was again a member of Team Canada for the inaugural Canada Cup series. His eight points that year (four goals and four assists) tied him for second in Canadian scoring with Bobby Hull, just one point back of team leaders Bobby Orr and Denis Potvin. Perreault was also with Team Canada for the 1981 event, which was won by the Soviets who defeated Canada 8-1 in the final game. |
