George McAvoy

Team captain George McAvoy was in his third year with the Penticton Vees, having already led them to a Western Canadian title in 1952-53, and the Allan Cup in 1953-54 before helping the small-town team from British Columbia win the World Championship in 1955. The win helped avenge the loss by Toronto's East York Lyndhursts the season before when the Soviet Union had become World Champions for the first time.

McAvoy anchored a Penticton defense that allowed only six goals in winning all eight games en route to the 1955 World Championship. The Canadian team clinched the victory with a 5-0 win over the Soviets in the tournament's final game. A tough defensive player who took care of his own end first, McAvoy contributed two goals to Canada's World Championship victory at the 1955 tournament including the final tally in the win over the Soviets.
