Charlie Burns

Charlie Burns was a member of the Whitby Dunlops in 1956-57 and helped the team win the Allan Cup that year. As winners of Canada's senior amateur championship, the Dunlops would represent the country at the 1958 World Championships. The Whitby team was strong at center with Burns, Bobby Attersley and Connie Broden and Canada outscored its opposition 78-4 in winning its first six games at the world tourney. A 4-2 win over the Soviet Union in the final game clinched the gold medal. Though his six points (three goals and three assists) in seven games ranked only sixth in scoring on the Canadian team, Burns' strong two-way play earned him the selection as the Best Forward at the World Championships that year. He joined the Detroit Red Wings in 1958-59 and went on to spend 11 years in the NHL with Detroit, Boston, Oakland, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.
