Because of his stormy relationship with Toronto Maple Leafs coach and general manager Punch Imlach, Carl Brewer retired from the NHL after the 1964-65 season. He fought to have his amateur status reinstated and joined the Canadian National Team in 1966-67. Brewer finally provided the Nats with a defenseman who could be a creative passer out of his own end and helped give the team its strongest roster ever. He was named to the All-Star Team at the 1967 World Championships after Canada captured a bronze medal.
Brewer played hockey in Finland in 1966-67 and later returned to the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings in 1969-70. In 1976, He served as an assistant coach with the Finnish team at the first Canada Cup tournament. |
