Brendan Shanahan's four goals tied Luc Robitaille for second spot on Team Canada behind Paul Kariya's five goals in 1994 as the Canadians won their first World Championship since 1961. Previously, the tenacious forward had been a Canada Cup champion in 1991. Shanahan had made his international debut back in 1987 as a member of the Canadian team that was disqualified from the World Junior Championships after brawling with the Soviet Union. In more recent years, Shanahan was a member of Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and at the Nagano Olympics in 1998. Shanahan returned to the Olympics in 2002 helping Team Canada win the gold medal over the USA. Additional international action includes a brief appearance playing for Dusseldorf in Germany during the NHL labor dispute in 1994. |
