Joe Sakic

Joe Sakic proved he wasn't just another "Ordinary Joe" when in the span of 13 months he won the 2001 Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, the Hart Trophy as the league MVP and a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympic Games. During the 2002 Olympics he was named the centre for the tournament all-star team and best forward. Sakic proved he was at his best in the clutch scoring four goals and three assists for seven points to lead all Team Canada players, including a remarkable two goals and two assists in the final game to lead Canada to a 5-2 win over Team U.S.A. Sakic had been to the Olympics previously in 1998, but only played four games before being injured.

Joe Sakic's first taste of international experience came when he helped Team Canada win the gold at the 1987-88 World Junior Championships pitching in with three goals and an assist in seven games. Sakic has also represented Canada at two World Championships, earning the silver medal in 1991 while leading all Canadian players with six goals and five assists for eleven points, and winning the gold medal at the 1994 championship adding four goals and three assists for seven points. Sakic was also a member of the Canadian World Cup of Hockey team which finished second to the U.S. in 1996. In 2004 fresh off their Olympic championship of 2002, Team Canada captured their first ever World Cup of Hockey Championship. Sakic, along with Mario Lemieux and Jarome Iginla were again the veteran leaders while all playing on the same dynamic line.

Sakic's NHL career has been nothing short of amazing. He has captained two Stanley Cup winning teams with the Colorado Avalanche, also picking up the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1996 as the most valuable player in the playoffs. In 2001 he won the Stanley Cup, Hart Trophy, Lady Byng Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award.
