One of the great team leaders in NHL history, Mark Messier is a six-time Stanley Cup champion who has also contributed to Canada Cup-winning Canadian squads in 1984, 1987 and 1991. He also won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 1989 World Championships. In 1996, Messier served as an alternate captain with the Canadian team at the World Cup of Hockey. The decision to leave him off the 1998 Olympic roster was one of the team's most controversial decisions.
