Wayne Stephenson appeared in two World Championships and one Olympic Games with Father David Bauer's Canadian National Team. He shared netminding duties with veteran Seth Martin at the 1967 World Championships, split the chores with Ken Broderick at the Olympics in 1968, and was the team's top goaltender ahead of Ken Dryden at the World Championships in 1969.
Stephenson was at his best internationally at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, recording a 6-1 win over West Germany in the opening game and shutting out East Germany 11-0 to help get Canada back on track after a 5-2 loss to Finland in game two. In three games at the Olympics that year, Stevens recorded a 1.28 goals-against average and helped Canada win a bronze medal. He had also earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1967.
Following his stint with the National Team, Wayne Stephenson entered the NHL with the St. Louis Blues in 1971-72. He later spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers and two years with the Washington Capitals. |
