The United States went undefeated through the tournament to become the inaugural Olympic champions in Women's hockey. Their toughest competition was against arch-rival Canada. The Americans defeated Canada 7-5 in the round robin after trailing 4-1 midway through the final period. The champions proved their superiority over the Canadians with a solid 3-1 victory in the gold-medal match. The heroes of the final were Shelley Looney who scored two power play goals and Sarah Tueting who made 21 saves.
