The Winnipegs of Manitoba brought home to Canada the nation's fourth successive Olympic gold medal. Like their predecessors, they went undefeated. In the final game, however, the Canadian team could manage only a tie with the Americans, even though referee Lou Marsh let the teams play 30 minutes of overtime in the hope that a winner would be determined. Thus, Canada's earlier 2-1 overtime victory over the Americans remained the difference between gold and silver. The conclusion to that game was as dramatic as any played at the Olympics. Doug Everett put the US in the lead 1-0 in the second period (periods were 15 minutes each), and it wasn't until just 1:14 remained in the game that Hack Simpson tied the game for Canada. In the first five-minute overtime period, there was no scoring, but at 2:14 of the final OT Victor Lindquist gave Canada the dramatic win in the tournament's first game. Little did the Canadians know at the time that that marker would turn out to be the gold medal goal.
