For the first time in Olympic history, Sweden won the gold medal. The Tre Kronor were led by young prospects Peter Forsberg, Kenny Jonsson, and Tommy Salo. Another tournament first occurred when the championship was decided by shootout. In the gold medal game, the Swedes and Canadians remained tied 2-2 after three periods and a ten-minute sudden death overtime. In the first round of the shutout, Petr Nedved and Paul Kariya scored for Canada, Magnus Svensson and Forsberg for Sweden. As a result, the shootout went to sudden death as well. Each team missed the first shot, and then Forsberg scored again, leaving it up to Kariya to try to tie the score for Canada. Salo made the stop, and the Swedes won their first gold.
