This was the first trip to the Olympics for the Soviet Union after two successful appearances at the World Championships in 1954 (gold) and 1955 (silver). Led by Vsevolod Bobrov's nine goals and the stellar goaltending of Nikolai Puchkov, the Soviets went a perfect 5-0, including a 2-0 win over defending champion Canada on the last day to decide gold.
