Jan Starsi


Born on October 17, 1933 in Sokolcich, Czechoslovakia. As a youth, Jan Starsi started playing ice hockey with Hockey Club Lipovsky Mikulas from 1945 to 1952. Afterwards, he represented club teams Slovan Bratislava and Sparta Prague in the Czechoslovakian national championship league. Starsi scored 267 goals in 300 games in that national league and played an additional 73 international games for Czechoslovakia where he scored 29 goals. He took part in five IIHF World Senior Pool A Championships and twice in the Olympic Winter Games, 1956 in Cortina D'ampezzo and 1960 in Squaw Valley. Under his guidance as head coach between 1973 to 1979 and also from 1984 to 1988, the Czechoslovakian National Team won the IIHF World Champion titles in 1976 and 1977. During his era, Dr. Jan Starsi was considered to be one of the best coaches in the world.
