Derek Holmes


Born August 15, 1939 in Kemptville, Ontario, Canada. Derek Holmes' international playing career included captaining Canada's Eastern National Team. He also played ice hockey overseas with Great Britain's Wembley Lions, Kitzbühl in Austria and in Switzerland with La Chaux-de-Fonds, Zug and Ambri-Piotta. He won the tournament best player award in the 1965 Spengler Cup and won a Swiss National Championship title. Derek Holmes was head coach for the Finnish National Team at the 1961 IIHF World Championship at the age of 21 and later coached Switzerland during the 1972 IIHF World Championship in Prague and 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo. He was Team Canada's manager at both the 1977 and 1978 IIHF World Championship tournaments. Derek Holmes served as Technical Director of Hockey Canada from 1974 till 1980, and performed numerous tasks for the national program at international events.
