Sven Bergqvist


Born August 20, 1914 in Stockholm, Sweden. Defenseman and forward. Sven Bergqvist played for Hammarby and AIK Solna in Sweden and was able to lay claim to five national championship titles during the period between 1933 and 1946. He represented Sweden in 30 national team games and was the coach of the Swedish National Team at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz. Aside from ice hockey, Bergqvist also participated at high levels in bandy, handball, table tennis and bowling. To top it off, he was the Swedish National Soccer Team goalkeeper for 35 games. Sven Berqvist had a tragic car accident in 1955 and spent his last years in a wheelchair before passing away on December 16, 1966. Bergqvist is considered to be the very first Swedish superstar and one of the best international ice hockey players in his era.
