Juhani Wahlsten

Born January 13, 1938 in Helsinki, Finland. Forward. Juhani Wahlsten got his start with the Kuopio club Kalpa where he played his first three seasons from 1956 59. The next season was a fine one for Wahlsten and his new Ilves teammates, winning the national championship in 1960 before heading to HJK for one season and then to Turku to help the TPS club from 1962 to 1969. Wahlstens last season was back with Ilves in Tampere in 1970 71, but was preceeded by a one year stop in Austria where to successfully guided the AC Klagenfurt club to the Austrian championship during the 1969 70 season. His Finnish statistical totals were impressive over the 13 seasons he starred in the National League, accumulating 137 goals, 82 assists for 219 points in the 200 games he suited up for. In the 1966 67 season, Wahlsten was selected to the SM Liiga All Star Team as a center. Wahlstens first of five IIHF World Championship tournaments was in Prague during the 1959 event. Then, throughout the 1960s he participated the three Olympic Games events 1960, 1964 and 1968 as well as fout other World Championships including the 1967 tournament where he led the Finnish team in scoring. Two of Wahlstens four goals came during a 3 1 upset over the powerful Czechslovakian side, which ultimately cost them a medal (silver) ranking. The combination of Wahlstens career both in Finland and during his 115 National Team appearances is largely the reason why he was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
