Borje Salming


Defenseman Borje Salming was born on April 17, 1951 in Kiruna, Sweden. A legend and pioneer, Salming was one of the first European legends to play professional ice hockey in the National Hockey League. He participated at three IIHF World Championship tournaments in 1972, 1973 and 1978 and received the IIHF Directorate best defenseman award in 1973. Salming appeared at the Olympic Winter Games in 1992 and Canada Cup tournaments in 1976, 1981 and 1991. He was named Team MVP at the 1976 Canada Cup and was selected five times to the NHL's Second All-Star Team. Borje Salming was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in 1996.
