Günther Sabetzki


Dr. Günther Sabetzki was born June 4, 1915 in Düsseldorf, Germany. He served as President of the regional ice hockey association of Nordrhein-Westfalen from 1958-1975. Dr. Sabetzki left that post to become President of the International Ice Hockey Federation. He remained as President for 19 years until 1994. Dr. Sabetzki was elected honourary President of the IIHF in 1994. Under his guidance, the IIHF developed as the world governing body of ice hockey, the European Cup was established in 1966 and the IIHF World Junior Championships in 1977. He was also a key member in establishing the Canada Cup tournament in 1976. Dr. Günther Sabetzki was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996. He was inducted to the IIHF Hall of Fame within the builders' category the following year.
