William Cleary


Bill Cleary was born August 19, 1934 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He played in three IIHF World Championships in 1956, 1959 and 1960. In Cortina in 1956 the USA finished second taking home the Olympic silver medal. At the 1959 Bratislava championships the USA finished fourth. The highlight of Bill Cleary's career came one year later when his American squad was crowned the Olympic Champions in Squaw Valley. He scored six goals at that Olympic tournament and added six assists to lead the United States' gold-winning team in points with 12. Cleary represented Harvard University for four excellent seasons and still holds Harvard records for most goals scored. Bill Cleary was the recipient of the Lester Patrick Award in 1997, the highest award of USA Hockey.
