| Bill Christian is a member of one of the most prominent families in United States hockey history. Father Ed Christian helped build the Warroad Arena that housed the famed Warroad Lakers in Warroad, Minnesota, while sons Bill and Roger were both long-time stars of the team as well as members of the gold medal-winning 1960 United States Olympic hockey team. Bill's son Dave played for the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" gold medal team and went on to a long NHL career.
Bill Christian first came to prominence in youth and high school hockey in Warroad, and after a year at the University of Minnesota he joined the 1957-58 United States National Team that became the first American athletic club ever to play in the Soviet Union. Christian also played for the U.S. National Team in 1960, 1962, 1964, and 1965. He is best remembered for his contributions in 1960 when he scored two goals in a 3-2 win over the Soviet Union that all but clinched the gold medal at the Squaw Valley Olympics. He earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1962. |
