John Francis Ahearne


Bunny Ahearne was born November 19, 1900 in Eire, Great Britain. He had a long career in international ice hockey. Ahearne was appointed Secretary of the British Ice Hockey Association in 1933 and President in 1971 until his retirement in 1982. He became a member of the IIHF Council in 1947, was elected Vice-President 1951 and served as President 1957-1960, 1963-1966 and 1969-1975 and as Vice-President 1960-1963 and 1966-1969. Ahearne built the Great Britain national team that won Olympic Gold in 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. His contribution to ice hockey was also recognized internationally and he received the Silver Cross of Finland, Order of Yugoslavia and Gold Cross of Austria. Bunny Ahearne passed away on April 11, 1985. He was inducted to the IIHF Hall of Fame within the builders' category in 1997.
