Macau became the 64th member of the International Ice Hockey Federation on May 12, 2005. The country currently does not have an independent national association within the sport of ice hockey and has been granted IIHF membership status as an Associate Member.
Macau did participate in the 2009 Challenge Cup of Asia in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The national team defeated India to finish seventh in this inaugural eight team IIHF event.
